Breathe

Hey, whoever you are, it’s okay. It is going to be okay. It will get better. Things will get better. Darkness doesn’t last forever you know, there’s always a new morning, a new day, and a new beginning. I know it’s hard and you might be feeling like you have no way out and it might get a bit suffocating for you, but I know you can pull through. Even if you feel like you can’t, and that it might take too much effort and too much time, I just want you to be a bit patient. Just wait a bit more. Hang on to yourself. I trust you and I have faith in you and it might not mean much but I’m proud of you. I’m proud of you for waking up and eating something. I am proud of you for greeting your parents in the morning. I am proud of you for helping your mom with chores, even if she doesn’t acknowledge them, I see your effort and I’m proud of you. I am proud of you for taking those stupid online classes and texting everyone back, I am proud of you for trying to keep up with everything. I am proud of you for going out to get dahi or making chai for your family. I am proud of you for being there for your friends and most of all I’m proud of you for not giving up.

We can take it slow, yeah? I know your shoulders are tensed up and your whole body is stiff and your eyebrows are furrowed and maybe you’re a bit tired as well. But take a deep breath with me and relax your shoulders. Let yourself loose for a few minutes and close your eyes. Try to relax for a few seconds. Drink water and forget about whatever bad thing happened today or two years ago. Just inhale……….now exhale.

Was all of your day bad or was it just that one bad thing that you chose to focus on? Are you in a dark tunnel or are you just facing the dark corner? It could be either of those and I’m no one to judge you over it. But hey, how about we try to focus on the good things around us just the way we notice the bad? Open your window and look at the sky, look at the few stars. Look at how they still shine despite all the pollution. If they can shine despite everything, who says you can’t? Look at that flower in your garden, is it not beautiful? Look at your mom, she’s trying her best to raise you, to provide for you. Look at your father, he might be emotionally constipated but does he not bulk buy the thing you said you liked once? Will you not give your kidney to your sibling even if you’re unwilling to share your charger with them? I know it’s difficult to appreciate these small things because of how fast-paced everything is, but are you gonna deny the fact that they make you happy? If you don’t have one, or all, of these things then I’m sorry life has been this cruel to you. You are very strong, even if you don’t want to be, even if you wish you weren’t. You are strong and I’m proud of you.

Not having parents isn’t the only thing that makes you strong though. Did you talk to a random person despite having anxiety? You’re strong. Did you stand up for something right? You’re strong. We all are strong, just in different ways. And I’m proud of all of us.

So even if you think nothing is getting better, look around you. Is it really not? Or are you so hung up on that one thing that it’s not even letting you appreciate the small things in this world that make you happy?

I’m not saying to forget about everything and pretend nothing is wrong. I am asking you to give yourself some you time. It’s hard, but not impossible. Time will pass, and you will move on or maybe you won’t care enough to remember it later. Time will pass so forget about your worries for a bit and breath.
