Missed Hereafter

Who said it all ends at death? The end of one story means the start of another. Had I known that eternal misery awaited me here to correct my lifetime of wrongs, I would’ve been a changed person.

People believe no one really dies until they have achieved the happily ever after, all fairytales promise. For some, it comes in the form of fulfillment of wishes, while some are fated to struggle all their lives only to find peace and happiness in death. That last moment of serenity, when hush has befallen all your senses; your mind and body are in a state of tranquility, untroubled now by the worldly deeds and desires, is the final death. It’s the happy ending many searched for their entire lives.

But what if bliss eludes you even then. Death has grasped your hand and is pulling you across the hereafter bridge, only for you to get trapped between the two worlds. You can’t turn back or move forward. Incarcerated by the past, glued to the present with no chance of future. Neither here nor there, you’re suspended somewhere in the unknown, being able to witness both worlds from the sidelines and unable to connect to any. Nameless, with no identification to link you to either place, destined to wander forever in a timeless prison, with melancholy bouncing off its walls, is a fate worse than Sisyphus’s. At least, he had a purpose to curb his feelings of madness. It’s the worst possible end imaginable.

Knowing you escaped darkness, only to be enveloped by it later, the road ends before you reached your destination. Mulling over the mistakes you had committed in life to understand the reason for your now tragic solitude. Rejected by both worlds, the transparency of your inescapable prison enabling you to look at the euphoria of the content souls, something you had always yearned to find, both in life and death. Your loved ones unaware of your everlasting agony, believing you to be finally at peace. No one would ever partake in any misconduct if they knew there was a fate worse than death. Unfortunately, I found it out too late and missed my chance of redemption.

A Lost Soul
