“Burnt Shadows” is a historical novel written by Pakistani novelist Kamila Shamsie. The story of this book is an amalgamation of complex events interwoven with intricately crafted characters, with the underlying theme of international politics. It is set in the current timeline which helps the reader visualize the whole setting, giving depth to the story.

The story revolves around a Japanese woman who was one of the survivors of the atomic bomb tragedy that had struck Nagasaki. Throughout the story, her tragedy has been referred to in various instances through the three swooping bird marks at her back which were imprinted when her skin got burnt during the attack. Hence, the title, which triggers a keen sense of emotion and empathy towards the characters.

The novel fiercely grips the reader’s attention as the plot parallels the major events that took place during and after the partition of the Sub Continent. The way the writer has developed a strong bond between Hiroko and her husband Sajjad through the art of learning languages is truly beautiful. Hiroko has been described as a person who had an interest in learning multiple languages. This aspect forms a tight knot between the characters and the culture they inhabit.

As the story moves on, Hiroko emerges as a strong-willed character who expresses an immense amount of maternal love for her son Raza along with sisterly love for her British friend Isle. The bond between Hiroko and Isle’s families plays a major role in the fore coming events.

Kamila has written her story magnificently while involving all the major events and groups that were emerging before 9/11 happened. By adapting her characters to the political background, she entwined personal and political aspects to create a memorable novel.

For those intrigued by history, this novel offers much more than just plain facts. It delivers a vivid view of history while depicting characters who closely experience those events and see their life altered by them. Therefore, it is recommended to all the readers who have a taste for politics and fiction alike.
