Eid ul Fitr and our festive meals

With Ramadan almost wrapping up and Eid ul Fitr nearing every day, this time period is known for Eid shopping and praying for Layatul Qadar. However this year, we would have to manage without the Eid shopping, practice social distancing and stay safe at home to contain the spread of COVID - 19. Corona may have ruined our Ramadan and Eid celebrations but let’s make the best of what we have! This is a golden opportunity for us to get closer to Allah and get our good deeds multiplied.

s all together. We would have to miss our Eid parties this year but who said we cannot enjoy delicious food at home? With dessert being a must at every Eid, let’s make this Eid no exception and make some delicious desserts to mark the end of Ramadan!





Here we are sharing one easy dessert and one mithai recipe which is bound to be appetizing and fulfill your heart’s content. We will teach you have to make the traditional popular mithai: barfi and Sheer Khurma! A timeless traditional sweet dish.

Due to coronavirus spreading like wildfire, it is best if we make this easy mithai at home hygienically. For this recipe you will need the following ingredients:

  • Fresh Milk - 1 and ½ liter

  • Sugar - ½ cup (can be adjusted according to taste)

  • Cardamom powder – ½ a teaspoon

  • Milk – ¼ cup (will be needed to add later on)

  • All-purpose Flour – ½ tablespoon

  • Cooking oil – 1 teaspoon

  • Pistachio and almonds (For garnish)

In a pot, pour 1 and ½ liter of milk and boil it till the milk is reduced to half while stirring constantly. Once half of the milk is left, add ½ a cup of sugar and ½ a teaspoon cardamom powder and stir continuously on medium to low flame for 15 – 20 minutes. Now, add ½ tablespoon of flour into ¼ cup of milk in a bowl then add the mixture into the pot of the milk on the stove and stir the milk till it thickens (it takes around 20 minutes). Lastly, add 1 teaspoon of oil and mix it for a few minutes.

Then take the thick paste and either spread it a dish and garnish with pistachios and almonds, let it cool down and cut it into squares or put it in a mold, garnish with pistachios and almonds, press it down and remove the mold and let it cool. Enjoy!





Sheer khurma is a subcontinental dish that is made with milk, different dry fruits, dates, and sugar. The name Sheer Khurma is Persian as ‘Sheer ’means milk while ‘Khurma’ is a Persian name for dates. For the Sheer Khurma, you would require the following ingredients:

  • Whole / full fat Milk - ½ liter (Whole milk helps in making it creamy)

  • ½ Vermicelli (amount can be according to your preference)

  • Sugar - ¼ cup

  • Dates chopped – 2 tablespoon (or according to preference)

  • Raisins, Almonds, Pistachios – ¼ cup each (can be chopped)

  • Ghee - ¼ cup

  • Saffron - ½ teaspoon

  • Cardamom powder - ½ teaspoon

In a pot, add ghee and all dry fruits and dates to roast them for around 5 minutes. Then stir in milk, sugar, and saffron and cook on medium flame for approximately 10 minutes till the sheer khurma comes to a boil and the vermicelli becomes soft. If you are not satisfied with the consistency, you can add 1 or 2 cups of milk. Keep in mind that when sheer khurma will thicken when it cools down. This dish can be served either warm or chilled.
